The Neverending Breakup Playlist

9/5/14

It's apparently breakup season and as much as stacking on pounds with tubs of ice cream and packs of chocolate or looping your rainy day playlist as you lie in bed covered in tissues and tears sounds so good, you might be overlooking the best part.

How could there possibly be a "best part" to a breakup, you ask?

Well sure, you may have just lost an important person in your life, but don't just count your losses--think about all that you have gained and be grateful for it!
...even if it included a few lbs, all the more love to spread around :)

And don't forget, a new insight, a peace of mind, the ability to know better the next time someone comes around (and I promise, they will!)

Alright, now let's get to this best part:

THE BREAKUP PLAYLIST

If you are spending the majority of your breakup period sitting at home, binging on ice-cream and watching Netflix or sitting in the dark and crying on the phone for hours on end to anyone who will listen--you're doing it so, sooo wrong.

Ok, ok, you're only doing it half-wrong (or half-right if you please).

I say this because the temporary cure is binging on Netflix (I watched all seasons of "Vampire Diaries" in a month), but one, you are just avoiding dealing with it completely.

You. Have. To. Go. Through. The. Motions.

And you'll hate me for saying that because I know it hurts, but it's part of the process. You have to die a little to resurrect yourself.

And that's where music comes in. Whether you're having an angry person f-you moment or down in the dumpiest of dumps because you've been dumped day--you're going through it. And you'll have your worst days, best days and moment of weakness days when you might even see this person again, but you'll keep learning and it'll get so much easier, and you'll hear "Clairvoyant" by The Story So Far and you'll feel how far you've come.

By this time, you'll have marked that Big Sean song as your song for the next few months.

So here's my playlist of breakup songs that seems to get larger and larger as new music is continuously created.

Vans Warped Tour 2014

7/13/14

Warped Tour came and went on June 19 and I'm proud to say I survived my first hot, hot Warped Tour!  Of course, not without some proof :)

It will forever be remembered as the day it was way too hot to be outside, wear black (especially if it's a cute outfit -__- ), take pictures, the day I got the gnarliest sunburn (that has left an embarrassing tan that still hasn't gone away!), and that Parker Cannon was equivalent to the day's weather.

And!! No idea how this happened, but this showed up when I opened my mail (something about called Google Auto Play?!) and I thought it was preeetteh cool :)

My first gif!! And how awesome that it's one for The Story So Far and that someone is crowd surfing!?

If you haven't seen it yet, Avicii's latest video "Hey Brother," may make you feel a little more emotional than wanting you to go cray and dance all over the place.  See about it hurrrr  ;)

Music Blog: Music & Musings

1/1/14

Who remembers those cool two weeks during the summer where I had no idea what I was doing with this blog?  No one?  Okay, well I do.

I had no idea where I was going with this blog, all I knew was that I loved reading blogs and I wanted to have a place to share my stories--whatever they were, just like my favorite bloggers.

So, along the way, I knew that I liked to share what I was up to, my different stories and what interest me, and finally, music.

I created the tab all things Music to list an archive of music-related posts and had Fridays as my music Fridays where I would post about all about music--whether it be a new band I discovered, a playlist, or at a concert. (keyword: had)

There is just so much to talk about with music, I decided to start a new blog--Music & Musings.

This new music blog of mine is dedicated to music, a little bit of an extended version of all things Music.

all things Music will still be here as a tab and I'll post updates on what I've posted on Music & Musings so you can all ch-ch-check it out!

The 1975 @ The Vinyl

11/8/13

The guys of the 1975 came to Vegas last Saturday and played a show at the Hard Rock's, The Vinyl.  Starting from their opening act, Linus Young, the show was already set to be a good one.  Good vibes and good music everywhere.  Even that little time in between the opening act and waiting for the main show to start, the waiting playlist was good.

So when they finally showed up and opened up with "The City," everyone was ready.

It's easy to just like this band solely for the guys in it.  Tall, tatted, a little rough on the edges and British accents?  Caahhhhmon.

But, it's also just as easy to hate on a group just for that reason.  The 1975 have so much more going on for them than just that.

I'm all about depth in music.  Lyrics mean everything.  Talent is major and the beat brings everything together.  When they played "Robbers," it was the best song to slow things down a little bit.  Each transition they had during the show worked and the energy did not die down one bit.  Everyone was feeling it.

The crowd favorite was "Chocolate" and they teased it well by just playing the guitar riff for a good 30 seconds before going into it full force.  At this point, everyone had their phone out to capture it all.  But, up until the bridge Matt says into the mic, "Put your phones away, this is just about us."

Which I am glad he did because some of us tend to forget the experience of going to a concert.  Going to see a band play and be a part of it all.  Taking the time to hold up your phone and record and take a picture does take a lot away of what you're supposed to: listen.

The band ended their set with another hit, "Sex," which riled up the crowd enough to be almost satisfied with the finale.  Although they did put on a good show, it's only natural to want a little more from something that was so good to us.

Jana Kramer @ Gilley's

11/4/13

Last Monday, I did something a little out of the blue--I went to a concert.  A free concert.
Gilley's at Treasure Island hosts a number of free concerts (super upset that I missed Kacey Musgraves over the summer) and Jana Kramer was one of them.

If you're a big "One Tree Hill" fan, like I am, then you'll understand how much I was fan-girling over lil 'ol Miss Alex Dupre.  Which, by the way, she did sing "Whiskey."

The entire atmosphere of Gilley's is super friendly and fun, with an open dance floor, bull-riding, bar and of course, the only thing that matters really, food.  I envied all those who could pick up on these little dance numbers so quickly.  I lack rhythm and agility to dance as well as they, or to just dance at all.  Period.

Jana's stage presence is so energetic and interactive, she's a great performer!  I was lucky to have been close enough to the stage to feel like I was really a part of the performance.  Lucky to have been close, unlucky to be behind probably, the tallest guy there.  I swear, this happens to me every time I go to a concert.  Every single time.  Hashtag short girl probzz

She did end the show on a good note with her hit single, "Why Ya Wanna."  The anthem for anyone who has been a victim of "the radar."  (Don't know what the radar is?  Look out for a post on this soon!)

Music Obsession: Daughter

10/25/13

Made up of Elena Tonra, Igor Haefeli, and Remi Aguilella, the band Daughter hail from London and have been making music since 2010-2011.  After a quick demo EP, Daughter came out with "His Young Heart," featuring the popular hit "Youth."  The band is currently on tour in Europe.

My love for Daughter runs for miles because I can listen to them anytime of the day and in what ever mood I'm in.  Their music is just so soothing and their lyrics are too real and too raw.  I've said it once before and I'll say it again, Daughter is the best thing to happen to my playlists.

The Break-Up Playlist, Phase I

10/11/13

Break-ups are never fun.  And sometimes (or maybe most of the time), the only thing to make you feel better is the person you're no longer with.  Cartons of ice-cream and dozens of doughnuts can only work for so long!  For me, the remedy for any break-up is a good break-up playlist.  Sometimes, you gotta get all the sadness out of your system in order to really be okay later, and what better way than with music?  No break-up playlist is the same and it will add on for many years to come, so this is just the first of the break-up playlists!

1. Nicest Thing- Kate Nash
2. Too Little Too Late- JoJo
3. Officially Missing You- Tamia
4. Breakdown- Mariah Carey & Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony
5. The Scientist- Coldplay
6. Hero- Regina Spektor
7. Thinking of You- Katy Perry
8. Almost Lover- A Fine Frenzy
9. Possibility- Lykke Li
10. Edge of Desire- John Mayer
11. Roslyn- Bon Iver & St. Vincent
12. Look What You've Done- Jet
13. Lesson Learned- Alicia Keys & John Mayer
14. All I Wanted- Paramore
15. Better That We Break- Maroon 5
16. Apologies- Grace Potter & the Nocturnals
17. Dreaming with a Broken Heart- John Mayer
18. Gravity- Sara Bareilles
19. Warwick Avenue- Duffy
20. The Ghost of a Good Thing- Dashboard Confessional
21. Bored of Your Love- Meg & Dia

Mechanical Bull

9/27/13

A couple of weeks ago, I posted about Kings of Leon's latest single "Wait For Me."  And just this week, they released their new album "Mechanical Bull."  I've been listening to it all week (just like I do with all new albums) and catching them on all talk shows. (They gave a full set on Letterman!) It has been awhile since they've come out with new stuff--since "Come Around Sundown"-- so this week, I've definitely been getting my Kings of Leon fix and I am loving it so far!

Top 3's I'm Obsessing Over

9/13/13

If you were to look at my "Recently Played" playlist, these songs would show up: every song on Kiss Land, "Hold On, We're Going Home," and "Almost is Never Enough."

For all of my XO fans, The Weeknd just released "Kiss Land" earlier this week!  So, it only makes sense that I've been looping his album all week.

Can't forget that OVO!  Drizzy Drake's "Hold On, We're Going Home" is so catchy and funky, I can't stop listening to it!

Ariana Grande is too freaking talented, guys!  Her ballad/duet is too good that I almost got upset with myself for not hearing this song sooner!  But...Almost is never enough...ha ha...Also, I found out this song was on "The Mortal Instruments" soundtrack, which is a series that I read but didn't really finish.  I mean, it was good...for awhile...then it felt like it wouldn't end and I'm just kind of over supernatural books of vampires and werewolves, ya know?

The Secret Love Playlist

1. True (LIVE)- Ryan Cabrera
2. Secret Love- JoJo
3. Timmy- Meg & Dia
4. Secret Love- Doris Day
5. Fallin' For You- Colbie Caillat

Lorde

8/23/13

The Lorde is here!  (And I don't mean Scott Disick!)  New Zealand native Ella Yelich-O'Connor, better known as Lorde, is the next up and coming.  Her strong stage name stems from her interest in all things royal and she is already starting quite the lineage.  Lorde has gained some serious street cred by reaching a major milestone on the Billboard charts.  The 16-year-old is famously known for her catchy single "Royals," which has recently been remixed by the XO himself--Abel Tesfaye, even better known as The Weeknd.  Check out her music and be on the lookout for her debut album, Pure Heroine due to be released late September.  Read more about this royalty here.

Everything's Better Acoustic.

8/9/13

Have you ever heard a song and then it's acoustic version and thought the acoustic version was better than the original?  Or, have you heard a song, hated it, and then heard the acoustic version and then it made you like the song a little bit more?  Ya?  Ya, me too.

I honestly love live shows better because it sounds so much more intimate and a little less manufactured and you really just get a whole different feel for the song.  Also, have you ever noticed that you really put a singer to the test when you hear them sing acoustic versions?  Ya?  Ya, I can name a few too.
Picture of John Mayer
Source: last.fm
Kkz, if you don't know me--then you are unaware with my obsession with John Mayer.  Surriously.  Like don't even tell me anything the tabloids say about him because his music tells me everything I need to know.  There's this concert he gave in LA at the Nokia Theatre and it is one of the best performances I've ever seen...through the T.V. screen.  I used to watch the "Where the Light is" DVD almost every day to the point where it broke on me.  Out of all of the performances on there, my absolute favorite is "In Your Atmosphere."  From what I know, this is the only time this song has officially been recorded--making it live and acoustic!
Picture of Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Source: last.fm
I'm convinced that the Yeah Yeah Yeahs can change my mood just by having their songs on shuffle.  I can feel super cool and badass every time I hear "Heads Will Roll."  Or, I can feel completely nostalgic and blahh as soon as I hear the words, "Wait, they don't love you like I love you."  I'm not talking about "Maps" today, but the acoustic version is just as good.  Today, we're talking "Hysteric."  Good lord, this is THE ultimate love song.  The original version is sorta like a happy-go-lucky-in-the-same-ballpark-as-Regina-Specktor's-"Us" as you picture you and your booboo doing silly, fun, crazy in love things.  While, the acoustic version is the song that plays when time stops at a standstill and you realize, "Holy shiz, I'm in love."  So basically, this song goes both ways.  It has two different uses and they're both included in the soundtrack to your love story playing in the background during two important milestones of the relationship!
Picture of Zedd
Source: last.fm
One of the quickest ways for me to fall in love with a song is through the lyrics.  So, when I heard "High dive into frozen waves where the past comes back to life," I was like a dog hearing the faintest sound, my head jilted up, my ears perked up, and I was all into this song.  Then came, "Hold still, right before we crash because we both know how this ends." Then of course, "You are the piece of me, I wish I didn't need.  Chasing relentlessly, still fight and I don't know why.  If our love is tragedy, why are you remedy?  If our love's insanity, why are you my clarity?"  Yup, it's that song you probably hear a zillion times on the radio.  Zedd and Foxes.  You know, I really like the song and the way it's played originally.  But, since we're talking acoustics here, I think I might like the acoustic version a little more.  By the way, Zedd is a little cutie!  And, yeah, of course I mean at 2:42! (If viewing this on a mobile, click here to listen!)
Keeping it short today because this is one post that I'm going to keep adding to since there are just too many to list!

Lastly, I need to tell you that I have the best friends in the world, and J.Chao aka the BIGGIE nafka is one of those people.
The time I would watch the "Where the Light is" DVD and it broke, I told her how bummed out I was that I couldn't watch it anymore.  Then one fine day, she drops by my house and brings me a brand spankin' new copy of the DVD!  Talk about true friend, huh?!
Oh and not to mention, the last time she dropped by my house, she surprised me w/ my early birthday present:
Left: "You're going to" Right: "JOHN MAYER B*TCH"
Looks like I'll be ringing in 21 with John Mayer and my closest friends in SD!
