On the Cover of Music

6/21/13

Just like most people, I love music.  I'm such a music junkie, I could spend more time looking up new music, reading lyrics, reading into those lyrics, and listening to music more than doing important things...like cleaning my room, doing my homework, or sleeping.

Which I already do...

Growing up with such timeless parents, I've grown a particular liking to classical music.  That classical stuff that includes pianos, violins, bells, and all that jazz.  And of course, the classics like Frank Sinatra, The Carpenters, Billie Holiday, Elvis Presley, Doris Day, Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald, James Taylor, and so many other greats. Overtime, I began discovering other greats like The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Cure, A Tribe Called Quest (Side note: Q-Tip is my all-time favorite rapper), The Doors, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Weezer, Brad Paisley, John Mayer, and Wilco...Just to name a few.  Of course, these are all greats in my humble opinion.

Anyway, music is a big part of my life and I'm sure it's the same for others.  So much, that these other people show the world what they think are classics and instead of singing them in the shower or in the car, they post it on YouTube.  We know these postings as "covers" of songs and they could either be the best or worst things you've seen.

As of lately, I've been playing SoMo's covers on repeat.  Seriously, this guy is amazing.  But, SoMo is just one of many artists whose covers that I absolutely love.  So today, in no particular order, I wanted to share just a few of my favorite covers with you all.

To continue fueling my obsession, here's my favorite from SoMo.
His rendition of Lana Del Rey's "Young and Beautiful" is so good too, I highly recommend checking that one out!

Next up, Gabe Bondoc.  Gabe Bondoc probably has the most videos in my favorites playlist on YouTube and for good reasons too, this man is crazy talented!  From his One Take Sessions to watching videos of him playing at parties and festivals, I'm still a fan.  There are seriously sooo many I could choose, but his take on Taylor Swift's "Love Story" will show his great cover skillzz and songwriting skillz because his originals are just as good.  Plus, I remember waiting up all night/morning for him to post this specific one!

Don't mean to toot my own horn or anything...but my friend Dom knew how much I loved Gabe Bondoc that when he saw him at a festival, he got a video of him saying hi to me :D!!!!
Hi Gabe! haha Thanks to Dom foreverrr!

Not only have I been watching Gabe's videos for awhile, but my first cover obsessions on YouTube started with Erika David.  She blew me away with her short but too great "Irreplaceable" by Beyonce cover, but I absoultely love lovee her cover of Alicia Keys' "Unthinkable."
Going a little back to T. Swizzle, I once was a huuugee fan of hers.  So when I first came across Julia Sheer's covers of her songs, I was so excited and amazed.  Her original songs are so good too, my favorite being "You Will Never Be."  So here she is with Tyler Ward singing a compilation of T. Swift's classics:

Does anyone remember that one song by Outkast "Hey Ya"...? Shake it like a Polaroid picture?  Ya?  Ya, well Obadiah Parker's version is so dang good.

To end this post of music covers, I leave you all with this sister duo--Lennon and Maisy.  I'm just going to let this video speak for itself...
I would also HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend checking out their other videos and watching them on "Nashville" on ABC, k thxxx byeeee!
